What are your favorite things?

Notice anything in particular about the collection of photos above? If you’re American, and of a certain age, they may ring a bell:

“Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens

Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens…”

If this is all new to you, get acquainted here!

On Day 8, we recognized ‘ordinary miracles’ - the often overlooked small details that make life more enjoyable and manageable.

On Day 19, we turn our attention to our favorite things in our lives and in our world. There may be some overlap, of course. But today we’re asking ourselves what do we absolutely love most - or have we loved at different stages in our lives? Some questions to consider:

  • What was your favorite toy as a child? Or now?

  • What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?

  • What is something you owned or had access to that made you feel proud?

  • What in your life now, something in your personal world or in our shared world, is a “favorite thing”?

Some people struggle with enjoying what they have because it brings up a sense of guilt or unworthiness. If anything like that comes up, consider reflecting on these feelings in meditation or by journaling. Presuming what we pursue doesn’t detract from the wellbeing of others, we are all deserve lives filled with what we love.

  • 1) A Minute Meditation on objects we value and appreciate

    2) 8 Minute General Gratitude Meditation with music (if you practice with a Buddy)

If you are short on time, this 3 breath practice can be done after you write your list:

With eyes closed or lowered gaze

    Inhale for 5 counts

    Hold for 5 counts

On the exhale, call to mind the 1st item on your list

Repeat with the second and third items

You can also try to add a smile or hand on chest to this practice
